The earliest in Scotland are found in the records of old monasteries. Adam French, tenth Laird of Thorndykes, son of Robert French, the ninth Laird and Margaret Home was born in 1599. On the death of his father in 1603, being a minor, he became a ward of the crown. ( 109p. 1893)
